How to Love Your Enemy

A pre-Valentine's Day Poem

A squawk box of bold assertions
assailed the quiet. The park’s gravel
crunching under her hard soled walk,
her talk loud and certain,
hectoring some bedraggled employee.

She was yakking into her phone -
not at me. Still, she yanked
my nerves, her dismissive hand
waving, as she stalked
through the park. If I’d had a badge

I’d arrest her for disturbing the peace.
The park was quiet
until she hijacked it.
Now, fixed in disdain I wrack my brain
to respond to her toxic smirk.

What would Jesus do
to win back the park?
I couldn’t just slink away,
I needed a retort. I prayed,
relaxed and I winked.

A poem to meditate on the non-romantic kind of love this Valentine’s Day.

Thanks for taking time to listen to this poem. I’d love to hear from you.
