Poet’s Morning Prayer

A poem in celebration of National Poetry Month
6
God, who created by a word, wake me
and make me attentive to the present moment.
Help me to measure words as precisely
as a cabinet maker with a micrometer.

Take my feet on a holy wander
to see what you want me to see.
May my words express wonder
and reveal what is within.

Give me a multihued palate
to delight in the taste of life.
Tune my ears to hear
the scratch of every secret.

May memories swell
with each scent
and each touch
feel your vibration.

Help me grasp the inscape
and not just gaze at the skin
Give me empathy
when I encounter entombed trauma.

Let me not be a locust in the swarm
focused on my bite of the pillage
but know who I am: a pilgrim
on his way to a home yet unknown.

Let me know who I am
and what I am to do
and with whom. Amen.
