Prayer After the Fire

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. Luke 4:18

To the Anointed One we pray

for the wife driven out by wildfire,
her home gone, her husband
doesn’t know where he is.
Bring glad tidings to her.

For those locked in shock
shaking their heads
and repeating “surreal.”
Proclaim liberty to them.

For those whose past dissolved:
the poets and artists in exile,
the kids orphaned from school.
Recover their vision.

For the woman who says,
“I’m sorry for my sadness.”
Crushed by the burden of her future.
Let the oppressed go free.

For the ones wasted with grief
who can’t pass along heirlooms
to their children.
Anoint them with your spirit.

When any life crashes and burns
douse us with resilience,
the ability to persist, to start over.
Proclaim an acceptable year to restore.
