Who knows why in wintery February
we celebrate the longing of lovers.
Is it the festival of the goddess Juno
or the feast of a priest martyred for love?

No love sonnet by Petrarch for Laura
could be more poignant on this slushy day
then this bouquet cast on the dirty snow
under this empty bench in Central Park.

Did she throw it at him for some mistake?
Did he toss it away in his disgust
when she didn’t show? It’s then I notice
a second spray tied with a black ribbon

carefully propped against the bench’s back
under the brass dedication plaque.
The flowers not discarded but offered
“For Susan who loved to sit on this bench”.
