Two Kings of Memphis

A poem in celebration of Martin Luther King Day.
Elvis from his first record
to his last day at Graceland.
Martin on record with workers
to lead them to a land of grace.

Two Kings of Memphis
one brought black music
to the white world.
The other brought us out
of a black or white world.

Two Kings who died too young
one singing old gospel songs
the other preaching the original gospel
dreaming about God’s Kingdom

where the King on the cross
renounced the title saying
if you want to be the greatest
be the one who serves the rest.

Memphis has two kings
Elvis sang, “follow that dream,”
Martin said, “I have a dream,”
but America has No Kings.
