Unclean Hands

The Pharisees observed that some of Jesus’s disciples ate with unclean hands… Mark 7:2

Employees must wash their hands after

according to the sign in the restroom.

We all learned how from Doctor Fauci

to wash unclean hands like a Pharisee.

Jesus didn’t care about dirt but what

is within, not clean hands but a pure heart.

What bothered him was the hypocrisy

of the ones who safeguarded sanctity

who narrowed the gates to keep people out

who used their clean hands to refashion

human precepts into God’s law, a blasphemy,

whose clinging to tradition became idolatry.

His concern is the purification

of his followers’ intention

that hands, clean or not, are open

offering undefiled welcome.
