God With Skin

I wanted a B.B. gun for Christmas
she gave me a book on St. Francis.
Now, I see my godmother understood God’s joke,
we want King David on steroids
we get a baby born below the poverty line.

Jesus doesn’t come with a gun
hidden under his straw pillow,
which is not to say
he won’t throw himself into a wrestling match
it’s just to say he likes to play peek-a-boo.

There is something about that baby in the manger
God with skin on, God with skin in the game.
Maybe instead of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”
We should sing “I’ve Got You Under My Skin.”

“I’ve got you under my skin
I’ve got you deep in the heart of me
so deep in my heart
that you are a part of me
I’ve got you under my skin.”

“I’ve Got You Under My Skin” Written by Cole Porter.
