On every table a basket of bread, warm rays of ruby glint from wine. The crowd beckons me into the line. I’m starving alone, won’t take and eat. Instead of taking in the abundance I shut down and sluff off any kinship pick up crumbs with my dry fingertip in the flicker of a dying candle. Warm bread and open hearts reach out and beckon me to eat, drink and delight; the invitation, like great northern lights, arcing flashes of color above me.
There is a grace in receiving communion in community. That’s the inspiration for this poem.

God’s Ear, a poem about hearing confession, will be the focus of our first Sunday of the month poetry discussion (8 p.m. EDT / 5 p.m. PDT).
Paid subscribers will receive a Zoom link in the mail on Sunday. If you have never joined us for one of these evenings of rich spiritual sharing, please do.
On Thursday I sent out a post saying it would be another poem – my mistake.
Here’s the link for God’s Ear.
